More About This Technology
2D scanners using Contact Imaging Sensor (CIS) technology tend to be more reliable and easier to maintain. In this technology, there is no image size reduction with a lens at all, as there is in CCD 2D scanning. With CIS scanning, a number of tiny fiber optic sensors are installed in a grid that transfers information from the scanned image into the scanner in a 1:1 scale.
This simpler setup removes all ability for distortion from a lens and it removes the need for images to be stitched together in order to create the final file. In addition, you won’t have to worry about calibrating cameras or specifying a depth of field.
However, Contex has solved a lot of the shortcomings associated with CIS scanners — largely the lack of color and potential for added noise during scanning — through their sophisticated NextImage software. The software uses a revolutionary algorithm to optimize every 2D scan you make.
The scanning process for a CIS is no different than a CCD 2D scanner. To scan, you would feed in your large-format engineering drawings, choose what file format you’d like the output to be, and hit the “go” button. The scanner will move your drawing using rollers, and then capture all of the visual data through those fiber optic sensors. The scanner’s software will compile all of the information, generate a digital version of your drawing, and then create the output file you specified.
