3D Printer

UltiMaker 2+ Connect

The UltiMaker 2+ Connect is the most affordable option on UltiMaker’s sales catalog. This option is perfect for any engineering department who wants to try out FDM printing without blowing their budget on a printer that they might not use.

As a whole, UltiMaker makes printers for engineers. The printers themselves are a lot better than everyday residential FDM printers that you might find. Even though the UltiMaker 2+ Connect is their most affordable, it has a ton of usability and versatility that you’ll appreciate.

It’s an incredibly easy 3D printer to use. You can easily swap out the hotend, the touchscreen prompts are easy to understand, and the extrusion process is super simple. In reality, all you need is an .STL file, and you can start making parts with the UltiMaker 2+ Connect.

We should mention that the build volume is on the smaller end, so this printer only works if you’re looking to make smaller parts. For a large build volume, you would have to upgrade to one of UltiMaker’s more expensive models.

With that said, the UltiMaker 2+ Connect is still a great option for any engineering department. You can use it as often or infrequently as you’d like, and it will run without faults.

Features and Benefits

Accuracy, Versatility, and Reliability Like No Other

The thing that we love about UltiMaker as a whole is that their 3D printers are very dependable. We always recommend this brand to engineering departments, because UltiMaker makes printers that can keep up with your demands and exceed your expectations. Their accuracy alone can sell any of these printers, since they can hit tighter tolerances than any other printers at the same price point. All the while, the UltiMaker 2+ Connect offers versatility and usability that you won’t find elsewhere.

A Great Entry-Level Option

A lot of additive manufacturing experts agree that the UltiMaker 2+ Connect is a great entry-level option for any engineer. It’s an FDM 3D printer that’s affordable, powerful, and easy to use — a combination that poises it as a great addition to your engineering department.

  • Intuitive design. The machine itself is really easy to use and troubleshoot. There are no secret sensors or mechanisms that can give you problems.
  • Easy to start new prints. You can start a new print remotely or with a single click on the machine, allowing you to start new prints with ease.
  • Low-cost but powerful. As a beginner, you might not want to spend a lot of money on a machine you might not use. The UltiMaker 2+ Connect gives you full-scale printing functionality in a low-cost package.

Make Parts Faster

FDM 3D printing is a great way to speed up your production workflows. Using the UltiMaker 2+ Connect allows you to avoid dimensioning parts in a manufacturing drawing altogether — you can go directly from a 3D CAD file to a printed object with ease.

  • Idea to part in 24 hours. It’s easy to go from a rough idea to a finished product within 24 hours, and that includes any prototyping you need to do.
  • Expedite your time to market. For new products, the UltiMaker 2+ Connect can greatly expedite your prototyping, iteration, and production phases.
  • Prototype with ease. This FDM printer makes prototyping effortless. You can quickly make a part, test it, revise the 3D CAD model, and then make another part for testing in a matter of hours.

Save Money on Production

Not only is the UltiMaker 2+ Connect faster than traditional manufacturing methods, but it can save you a ton of money. It saves money on saved manpower, low operating costs, and time saved on the drafting table.

  • Bring plastic production in-house. The UltiMaker 2+ Connect is fully capable of handling your low-volume plastic production. You can simplify your supply chain and optimize your part quality by bringing this process in-house.
  • Very low operating cost. The operating cost is simply the cost of material and the low cost of residential-grade electric — both of which are incredibly inexpensive, resulting in very low operating costs.
  • No supervision required. With the right parameters and setup, you can start a print and walk away until it’s done. This saves you time and frees up your engineers.

More About This Technology

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is one of the most common forms of 3D printing, and it’s largely used by hobbyists and DIYers. It has a special place in industrial settings as a low-cost way to make presentable 3D parts. You might use an FDM printer to create a scaled model home, an aesthetic representation of the final part, or a non-load-bearing component.

FDM works through an extruder on an XYZ (3-axis) gantry. Solid plastic is pushed against a hot nozzle which turns the plastic molten. The molten plastic is then carefully applied to the bed of your 3D printer. The 3-axis gantry will move around in X and Y, drawing a single layer of your 3D model. When it’s done, the nozzle will move up in the Z direction and create a new layer directly on top of the previously-extruded layer. This process continues until your full 3D-printed part is completed.

FDM printers are not used for load-bearing applications due to the weakness of the plastic material, and the weak points between each layer of the print. Even a small cyclic load can easily cause failure between layers.

You might find FDM-printed parts in the aerospace, medical, and consumer goods industries.
