3D Printer

EP-M400 Metal

The EP-M400 is one of the larger options in EP’s catalog. Their larger sizes come with ladder access, but the EP-M400 is accessible from the floor. With this printer, you unlock a larger build volume that translates into bigger pieces that you can make.

This is also one of the newest printers created by EP. It’s made for engineering departments who don’t want to overspend for a 3D printer, but also want an impressive print speed, build volume, and functionality.

The EP-M400 is one of the more versatile printers on the market. For starters, it’s a metal SLM printer, which means that it makes parts that are close to 100% metal by volume. Making the same parts without this printer would require a full-scale machine shop and a trained machinist. However, you can skip all of those added costs and time commitments by using an EP-M400 instead.

There are plenty of engineering departments that rely wholly on the EP-M400, without any outside machine shops at all. This is a great way to keep your IP secure, control more of your supply chain, and streamline the full process.

Features and Benefits

Industry-Preferred Functionality and Reliability

The EP-M400 is a printer that is supported by industrial engineers across the globe. This printer has a great combination of functionality, reliability, and durability. It will fit in your existing production workflow, and it will expedite most parts of the process. The best part? You can run this printer nonstop every day, or only turn it on once a month and it will work exactly the same. Its reliability will ensure you can get a part printed whenever you want.

Keep Your Costs Down

In general, SLM 3D printing is a more affordable way to make metal parts as compared to traditional machining methods. The EP-M400 takes this idea to the next level with even lower operating costs, upfront affordability, and no expensive maintenance ever required.

  • Low operating costs. Unlike traditional machining, you don’t need someone constantly running the EP-M400, nor do you need expensive raw materials. As a result, the operating costs are very low.
  • More affordable than machining. The EP-M400 is one of the most affordable ways to make parts out of pure metal alloys in small quantities.
  • Keeps production in-house. Swapping to in-house production will cut down on your operating costs even further. No more cost hikes that are outside of your control.

Versatility You Need

Having an EP-M400 at your disposal unlocks a new level of production and manufacturing that you might not have had before. It adds so much versatility to your engineering department and allows you to make metal parts at a moment’s notice.

  • Access to a wide range of materials. With its powerful laser, the EP-M400 can handle a wide range of materials, allowing you to make parts out of stainless steel and titanium.
  • Easy-to-use machine keeps it simple. The full machine is so simple to use, that anyone on your engineering team can run the EP-M400.
  • Fits into any production workflow. You’ll notice that the EP-M400 seamlessly integrates into an existing production workflow, cutting out a lot of added cost and lead time.

Keep Your Costs Down

Using the EP-M400 in your production workflow will streamline the creation of every part. This machine can help you from the initial prototype to the final production run.

  • The best way to prototype. Making metal prototypes can be expensive and come with long lead times, but the EP-M400 avoids both of these issues.
  • Faster production phases. The EP-M400 is able to create high-quality production-level parts in a fraction of the time.
  • Go from idea to final part in 24 hours. It’s easy to come up with a 3D model, make a prototype, and then make a final product all within 24 hours when you use the EP-M400.

More About This Technology

Selective laser melting (SLM) metal 3D printing is the newest form of 3D printing that is reserved almost exclusively for industrial applications. These printers are more expensive to purchase and have higher operating costs, but they create parts made out of pure metal. A bed of metal powder sits directly under a high-powered laser on an XY (2-axis) gantry.

When the laser shines on the powdered metal, the metal fuses together and becomes molten, then solid. The head of an SLM 3D printer will move around the bed of metal powder, fusing together your part one layer at a time. The bed then moves down a little, a new layer of metal powder is applied, and the laser continues working on the next layer. This continues until your part is finished.

After the part is fused together, it goes into an oven to cure and get rid of any additives in the metal powder. After some time, you’re left with a part made completely out of metal.

SLM Metal 3D printers rival traditional CNC machining, and the end result can be seemingly identical. However, it’s much faster, typically more affordable, and can run 24/7 with very little supervision, unlike a machine shop.

You can find parts made from SLM Metal 3D printers in almost any industry. Wherever CNC machining is used, SLM Metal printing can be the substitute. Examples include the aerospace, automotive, medical, industrial, and defense industries.
